Oil painting commissions delight me!

Well— let me be honest. When Liz asked me to paint a photo from her last trip to France with my mom, she said I could paint it in whatever medium I would like… but that means oils.

Can you blame me? The reference photo she sent (taken by Liz herself!) was begging to be painted in oil. ➜

Oil Painting step one:

Add a second painting. You’re already painting one, and your mom was on that trip too.

oh. also grid over your references, then draw with vine charcoal. THEN a light spray of fixative. trust me.

(I forgot the fixative.)

I put my shadows in magenta, pushing the warmth of the stone’s shadows from the beginning, and my lights with a chartreuse.
(that my mom gifted me from France!)

I paint slowly, progressing layer by layer, letting some layers dry between. These two paintings were commissioned in June 2025, and finished (taken to their new homes) in December 2025.

When I get to the details, I focus on one painting at a time.

These details were especially fun and challenging. The rocky building textures, the bright green foliage.

These little windows, and rocky buildings took soooo much patience!

The final paintings are well loved in their new homes ♡
